January brings Deergirl and Tarantulani

January 23, 2011

Our performers this month are Robert Bechtel and Kathy Zaborsky who wrote a fable based on two characters, Deergirl and Tarantulani.*

Their sketchy performance is inspired by their installation and movie “Deergirl and the Magical Forest,” inspired by an early horror movie, the 1920s’ silent film ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,’ by German expressionist Robert Weine based on a screenplay by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer.

Robert is a visual artist and Kathy is a theatre artist…they will be bringing elements from their respective disciplines together, and creating an immersive poetical experience within the gallery-space.

Tix $10.

Don’t forget you don’t have to draw well but you’ve gotta draw! Bring your own art supplies. Come have a pint or a glass of wine and Owl Acoustic Lounge’s famous deep fried pickles.

*Their exhibition and movie can be viewed at the Bowman Bowman Arts Centre – 811 5 Ave S – Lethbridge, AB

A Jazzy Sketchy’s!

November 15, 2010

Claire de la Lune a la Dr. Sketchy's!

Saturday, November 20th · 2:00 – 5:00
Owl Acoustic Lounge
411 – 3rd Avenue South

Lethbridge, AB
Bring a beret and your jazz hands!

A lovely afternoon of drawing at the Owl before hitting all the art shows in town! (And a great place to finish up your 3x8x10 drawings for the Trap\door Fundraising Raffle.)

Our model, Clair de la Lune, is presenting an afternoon of Fosse Jazz. Bob Fosse was an American choreographer who was highly influential to the jazz dance style. He was very simplistic yet powerful in his staging and movement. He used a cool, jazz sensibility in his choreography, yet it was burlesque in nature and sleek by choice with pelvic movement and heavy leans.

Fosse Jazz has engaging poses, angles and positions that would suit the portrait studio greatly.

We’re also going to try out the Parisian method of life drawing whereas we start with longer poses and they get progressively shorter. So bring your beret, some paper and your drawing implements. French accents and moustaches optional.

Tix $10.

You don’t have to draw well but you’ve gotta draw!

All of a sudden its a Winter Circus

September 18, 2010

Starting to get a complex about us trying outdoor drawing events. The temperature is 1C  and rain is forecasted. Rain at 1C has this startling habit of turning into snow. And while our models seem to be really up for this, we are moving our venue to the Owl Acoustic Lounge  on Third Ave South. Just down the street from Galt Gardens. We hope to see you there!

Come draw with us between 11am and 3pm. We will be drawing for 30 min periods on the hour.

Bisous,
Lady K

Dr. Sketchy in the Park!

August 23, 2010

Vintage Circus Performers - oohhlalala!

If you can’t make it to the Traveling Road Show this Sunday in Blairmore, DO NOT DESPAIR! Dr. Sketchy’s Lethbridge is coming to ArtWalk in September! Thats right we’re going to be in Galt Gardens IN A FREAKING TENT! We’re going to decorate so look for glamour and frivolity!

We’ll have 30 minute drawing sessions every hour – starting at 10am. We’ll also have 30 minute breaks so that all of you can wander around and enjoy the artyness of Lethbridge. With multiple models, we’ll be able to have some amazing poses! We even hope to have long and short poses going on simultaneously – so everyone will be happy!

This is an all ages drawing session so bring ONE & ALL to the tent to draw! You don’t have to draw well – butchya gotta try to draw at least. We’ll be out doors so you may want to consider bringing, besides your regular drawing supplies – a drawing board/easel, a lawn chair or blanket, sunscreen, a hat and water.

Of course, we’ll have random drawing contests throughout the day too! If you know of a business that would be interested in sponsoring a contest, please let us know.

We’re pretty excited, so we hope you come play with us… Oh and by the by, this is a FREE event? The AAC is helping us out and the models are all volunteering! Thanks models and arts council!

Did I mention we are in a TENT! Wheeeeee!

August 10, 2010

Dr. Sketchy's in August!

As promised, we are taking Dr. Sketchy’s on the road!

This month Dr. Sketchy’s Lethbridge is traveling into the Crowsnest Pass to experience the performance art hilarity of Frankie Slide and Rocky Rock. To track their adventures and prepare your mind follow them on myblairmore.com

You don’t have to be *able* to draw, butcha gotta draw!

We’ll be going on a scenic historical tour as well as drawing models. This will be unlike any drawing adventure you have ever had! We also have activities, prizes and some refreshments. Feel free to bring any size sketchbook you want – though we may not be sitting for some of the drawings.

We encourage caravaning up to the pass – if you have space in your car or are looking for a ride leave a message on the facebook event wall. Hopefully, all of you can make it on our little adventure!

Summer in Lethbridge

July 29, 2010

What the studio will look like after my residency.

Alas, it is summer in Lethbridge and the annual exodus for places unknown has occurred. I’ve always had mixed feeling about this. I like the emptiness of the city but miss the mix of interesting people.

For this reason, Dr. Sketchy’s: Lethbridge is giving their selves a little spa vacation for the month of July. But do not despair! We have a lot of events in the works!

In August, we are taking Dr. Sketchy’s on the road to Blairmore. I am working on a residency at the Gushul Studios, with Christopher Moore, as part of the Trap\door Residency program. So we will be presenting a very different style of sketchy’s afternoon – a sketch walk! Watch this space for more details but keep Aug 29th open!

In September, we will be hosting a FREE, all-ages, circus themed Dr. Sketchy’s in Galt Gardens as part of Art Walk. Wheee! I’ll post up dates and times as we have them. Send us an email if you would like to volunteer your circus modeling skills.

We are also talking about doing an audio Dr. Sketchy’s on Trap\door Radio in the fall. Very excited about this opportunity!

We are planning a very magical Dr. Sketchy’s in October with the SAAG and a very French-style session for November with extra long poses for you painters… Also, we have been approached about holding a Dr. Sketchy’s Art Show next spring! So you’ll not want to miss any events so you can work on your submissions.

See you soon lovelies!

Bisous,
Lady K.

Madame Pamplemousse, who is French (and therefore requires sex… merely to exist) is starving for his touch. Tonight, she has planned to seduce him, but instead awakens something within him she never knew was there.
